Design thinking challenge for ELL students

We tried another design thinking challenge with different problems. This time, my problem was more
help for ELL students. I chose this problem to make our school better which was our ultimate goal.
Also, I definitely thought that it would be better school life for ELL students and they would feel more
comfortable in the classes.

Our process was divided into 5 steps. First, we do empathize step which is for getting more information
about our topics by researching, interviewing and consulting experts. So, I needed to meet experts like
Mr. Lee who is principal of our MS, the ELL students, some teachers who have ELL students in their
classes and Ms. Serna who is teacher of ELL class.

After that, I went to Define step. We literally defined our answers we got from Empathize step. I tried to
figure out the things that end users are trying to get and ways that they want to feel like insight meaning.
I found that ELL students would like to and need more helps in a way that makes them feel more
comfortable. Mr. Lee wanted to make the ELL students to improve their English skills more and feel
confident in the school.

The next step was Ideate. We basically brainstorm solutions that can solve our problem and even if they
obviously look impossible and crazy. I listed out all the ideas that seemed like would work. For example,
  • Having ELL class on everyday or for only students who need more help.
  • Push in help, ELL assistant who comes into the class.
  • Specific ELL help with high school students after school, can be ASA.
  • Modified grade?
  • Code or some kind of system to communicate with teachers.
  • Let the students use their IPad whenever they want to because they might not understand the words that teachers are using.
  • Let the teachers know that students are struggling and they need to speak slower or explain once more only for them.
  • Give more time to work on their home work or project than other students

And then, we choose only one of them to prototype. We present one of our solutions to the experts and get
feedbacks from them. But I was just stopped at that point because I was running out of time. The next step
is Test that we actually try it out.

This time, I had to work on myself while others were working with partner or partners which was quite
challenging for me because the problem that I had before with my partner was solved on the Empathize
step and we split up into two groups. It was also challenging for me that I had to make the exact
appointments schedule with experts to interview them. Because I wasn’t really used to it. If I had more time
to work on this project, I would have really wanted to finish this project. The problem that I was working
seemed to be pretty serious problem to the end users. And I wanted to help the ELL students who seem to
be having hard time in the classes as an ELL student who is having class with them. It was unexpected that
the most of ELL students are having more hard time than I was thinking in the classes which made me more
focus for it.
